Stockholm -- Swedish telecom vendor Teligent has employed several different databases in its products in the past -- including Oracle, Berkeley DB and Microsoft SQL Server -- but now the company has chosen MySQL Cluster to be the standard for its Teligent P90/E platform, on which its products are based. Teligent supplies innovative network services like voice message systems, Mobile data and VoIP to operators like British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, TeliaSonera and Vodafone.
A wide-range of Teligent applications will be making use of MySQL Cluster, including Mobile Office/IP Centrex, Messaging, Prepaid/Calling Card, Softswitch and Mobile Service Delivery Platforms. Key data management requirements across these applications include 24x7 availability, real-time performance and scalability to handle millions of subscribers.
New functionality in MySQL 5.0 and MySQL Cluster have made it possible to scale databases horizontally without significantly increasing costs.
“Teligent delivers products to both smaller players in the telecom market as well as to the biggest and best known operators,” said Klas Karlsson, senior database manager at Teligent. “Through the years, we have recognized that MySQL scales easily to meet increasing demands for performance and functionality. We started using MySQL six years ago and our requirements have grown in parallel with the functionality in each new version of the database. It’s an advantage to support and develop tools for only one database. Our choice was simple since MySQL has proven to be stable and easy to work with.”
Aiming to be the world leader in its market, Teligent has established offices in more than a dozen countries on five continents.
“Today, Open Source solutions have been fully accepted in the international market,” said Hans Floberg, head of platform development at Teligent. “As an example, our business strategy includes solutions with Linux on standard Intel machines. One of our key customers and one of Europe’s top telecom operators recently praised our standardization on MySQL as an innovative adoption of the technology of the future.”
Competition is fierce when it comes to creating value-added services for mobile systems. Teligent’s choice of MySQL is seen as a natural component in the company’s strategy -- where cost-effective, modular design is a key concept.
